Today was the day. The day I would finally get to see  my best friend and older brother, Zander. Leon had told me that they would be coming soon and he had caught sight of him and his cubs in the city yesterday morning. Zander told Leon to have me meet him at sun high near the city but not to close where I would get caught. He knew all about the coliseum and why I couldn't be to close to the city and he was very understanding. I am so excited though! I haven't seen Zander since Athens and I was looking forward to see his little cubs.

I glanced up at the sky, noticing that it was getting close to being sun high, so I decided to make my journey. I noticed Flora as I walked out of the camp and smiled towards her. "Hello, Flora." I said softly.

"Hey there, Maxie." I couldn't help but chuckle. Iris use to call me that and it was nice hearing the nickname again. I couldn't stay and chat so I nodded my goodbye and kept on with my walk.

I heard a loud cry and soon felt Leon perch himself on my shoulder, "Good day, Leon." I said in his native tongue.

"Hello, Max. Are you looking forward to seeing Zander?" He asked.

I nodded my head rapidly, "You better believe it! I'm an auntie and I can't wait to see them! I'll be Auntie Maxie!" I know I sounded like a cub, and not my normal quiet, soft self but I was excited! Leon nodded his little black head and glanced away. I was a little confused. Normally when it's just him and I, Leon is so talkative. "What is it, Leon?"

"Hmm?" He hummed, seeming to completely miss the fact that I asked a question. "Oh it's nothing Max, just you know nervous around all these felines." What a total lie. He grew up with lions! How could he be nervous? Before I could even call him out, he opened his beak. "Well, I have to go. I must get go. Have a nice day, Max. I'll see you later." And with that he was gone.

I was beyond confused. I thought we had agreed that we would go see Zander and the cubs together. Oh well, birds are strange creatures as it is so whatever I suppose.

I walked a little further, when I caught a familiar scent. I felt my face spread with a smile when I caught sight of a large golden lion. His fur looked cleaner than ever. His creamy brown mane and sparkling blue eyes. He had his signature smirk planted firmly on his face and I took off sprinting.

Once I got close enough I pounced on to him and gave him a large hug.

"Hey there, Maxie girl!" Zander roared excitedly as I let go of him. He crouched down excitedly and pushed me around playfully.

"Ha, knock it off Zander!" I laughed as I pushed him back. I then noticed that it was only him, "Hey! Where are these cuties I've been hearing about?" I asked confused.

That smirk and playfulness soon disappeared and a sad look appeared on his face. "Maxine..." He said softly. He never called me Maxine. "There is something I must tell you..."

"Oh no, they took them didn't they!" I cried, "They're going to make them hunters aren't they! Or make them fight?!"

"What? No, no..." Zander said, shaking his head. "I left them with Zalia, they are fine. My master would never sell them. But when I arrived I visited the coliseum, after hearing some rumors about an albino leopard being sold to them..." My heart stopped.

"No."

"I talked to some of the fighters and asked about the leopard. To find out their name. They said her name was Iris."

"No."

"They said that she never stood a chance." Zander finished in a whisper, tears staining his fur.

No, it couldn't be. Iris was dead?

"I wanted to make sure it was her, so I asked they about her ruby necklace." He began to bring something out of a pouch that I hadn't realized he had. "They said they were allowed to have it since he had been the one who killed her. He felt sorry for me, after I began to cry so he gave me the necklace. I had it fixed up before I came." He whispered as he dropped the necklace around my neck.

I was frozen, tears welling up in my eyes. She never even had a chance. Those stupid, pathetic hunters! How could they! She was the kindest, most beautiful leopard! How...how...

"Max?" Zander whispered breaking me out of my state. "Come on, Maxie don't cry." I had not even noticed I was crying. "Maxie." He whispered as he began to touch my shoulder. I violently shook him off.

"No, no, no , no!" I yowled as I backed away from him and took off running.

My Iris. My love. She was gone.

Yeah, a little angst for Maxine. I couldn't decide if I wanted to kill Iris off or not, so I decided to haha.
